Enterprise Integration: A Major University

The Project

Enterprise Integration, Implementation and Integration of Oracle Financial and Human Resources Programs.

The Client

The University of Pennsylvania is a private, independent institution of higher education.

The Challenges

During Y2K compliance upgrades in 1996, The University of Pennsylvania officials realized that their computer systems were obsolete and their business practices outdated. The university purchased Oracle Financial and Human Resource applications to meet four objectives:

  1. Improve decision-making capacity.

  2. Improve quality of service to all levels of users.

  3. Reduce costs and enhance revenues.

  4. Reduce risk.

The university then turned to Wability for a strategic partner with higher education expertise and system implementation skills.

The Solutions

Wability worked with the university and the Oracle team on the functional specifications for their relational database management system. We modeled the university’s future system needs against Oracle’s current functionality; then identified gaps and helped develop solutions. For all necessary transactions, such as creating purchase orders and processing invoices, Wability developed specific scenarios, tested them, and documented the results. Processes were then improved as needed. After that, we tested process integration, stringing multiple scenarios together and performing end-to-end checking. We helped the university meet its objectives with test planning, documentation, scenario creation, test execution, and results reporting.

The Benefits

  1. The university’s implementation of Oracle’s Enterprise Resource Planning systems now gives faculty and administrative personnel the information they need quickly and easily.

  2. All users benefit directly from both cost savings and ease-of-use.

  3. Unit administrators have the tools they need to formulate strategies and manage academic programs.

  4. Faculty and staff appreciate the freedom to pursue their work, rather than follow complex, time-consuming, and costly administrative processes.

With our help, The University’s Oracle system now supports everyone—from people on the cutting edge to those who rarely use a computer.
